Atkins design of the Portland Marina at Osprey Quay has been approved

The design of Portland Marina at Osprey Quay (Dorset, UK) has now been approved and these facilities will become one of the first venues ready to host the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The regeneration of Osprey Quay includes the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), which will host the Games' sailing events and a new 260T hoist dock structure for Sunseeker International that is also being designed by Atkins. The marina comprises a 860m long tipped stone breakwater, some 560 floating pontoon berths, a 40T hoist dock structure, 0.96ha of land reclamation, new revetment frontage, piled access walkways and link bridges, dredged navigation channel, facility buildings, retails terrace, engineering workshops and supporting infrastructure all in the heart of the existing Portland Harbour. Planning approval by Weymouth & Portland Borough Council gives the green light for the marina works to start in August and construction work on the WPNSA early next year. Both schemes are planned to be completed by the end of 2008, meaning Weymouth and Portland will be one of the first venues ready for the 2012 Games. This exciting project will be the largest single yacht marina constructed in the UK since 1993. The development will create a vibrant new public space on the seafront - a place where people can experience a first class marina as well as the restaurant, retail and business facilities.
