TWS & Partners complete hotel with pinstripe style

The project is briefed as a boutique business hotel located in a main busy road in central of Jakarta, Wahid Hasyim street. Mainly known as a tourist strip this area contains many coffee shops and small hotels, which cater for local & foreign tourists, but also has direct access to Jakarta's central business district The site itself is a relatively small 1,500 sq m sandwiched between the Spanish embassy and an office building, easily visible from the CBD. The client wanted to build a custom, self operated business hotel to deliver an unique product to the market, and TWS Partners were awarded the contract to design the Akmani hotel in 2007.

The lobby and terrace, with a café as a main welcoming space, are located in front of the hotel and elevated three metresabove the ground, to provide an unobstructed view from and to surrounding area.

The building's mass is broken into several ‘floating’ boxes, which is a strategy to communicate with the surrounding building height and road width. The first horizontal box was put above the clea,r glass-skinned main lobby and café area, to accommodate all types of meeting rooms. The second vertical box, which accommodate the double corridor, 116 bedroom units, 'floats' above the first horizontal box, leaving an outdoor space for leisure activity. This outdoor space gives a unique tropical outdoor atmosphere for the swimming pool and bar / lounge area. This outdoor, communal space, also 'suspends' the tower, and breaks down the whole scale as a strategy to correspond, sympathetically, with the building height and its surroundings.

The tower was seen figuratively as a business suit with a pin-stripe pattern. This theme was generated through the glass skin and window pattern, the glass made from three different colours and assembled with a conventional aluminum 'curtain wall' structural system.

The lobby's main welcoming space is fluid with the coffee shop and lounge ending with a double-height ballroom to accommodate 200 people. The colour and materials were chosen from an 'earthy' natural palette, to give a warm, cozy and yet formal atmosphere for the guest's experience. A collage between burnt – natural stain wooden finish, with grey - stripe texture paper - back wallpaper and back lighting, illuminated, and a banana paper 'glass sandwich', give a sedate colour and feel for guests to enjoy both formal and informal activity.
