Design International completes Montpellier's new shopping complex

The 140,000 sq m leisure district Odysseum opened on September 24th, 2009 in Montpellier, France. It includes a Gaumont Multiplex Cinema, Vegapolis Ice Rink, Galilee Planetarium, Mare Nostrum Aquarium and a range of restaurants. The site also boasts a Géant Casino Hypermarket, an Ikea Furniture Store, a Decathlon Sports Outlet as well as an extensive range of boutiques and retail outlets to complement the leisure offering in the district Design International, firstly chosen for the masterplan of the whole development, was then appointed to design the Shopping Centre.

The interior and exterior design of the two storey 50,000 sq m shopping mall takes its inspiration from the unique diversity of Montpellier, which historically has been an important trading crossroads in Southern France with ancient links across Europe and the Mediterranean. Design International was selected for their global experience and their creative expertise that would recognise Montpellier’s unique character. The respected architect DGLa was selected as DI’s French partner to assure that the unique scheme could be implemented on site successfully.

DI, working for clients Icade and Klépierre, has created a scheme based on a voyage of discovery. As a natural extension to the city centre, to which it is connected by a modern tramway line, the innovative development is dedicated to the world of shopping and leisure. The lower level with its elliptic malls takes it’s inspiration from the Odyssey of Ulysses and features the Ithaca, Calypso and Sun plazas as well as the Islands of Cyclops and Circe. The upper level represents the future, taking it’s theme from the Milky Way and the Constellations.

The modern design of this part of the centre reflects both the conquest of space and modern technology with materials such as stainless steel, mirrors and aluminium while hi-tec lighting sculpts the spaces depending on the time of day.
