Design and sustainability on Steigereiland

This new house is inspired by the traditional dike-houses of Durgerdam. Except for the floor covering, the entire house is made of wood. The horizontal windows provide an intricate pattern of light and shadow. The sustainability is attained by several energy efficient features and by using rainwater to flush the toilets. On the ground floor is a large live-in kitchen, above which an intimate living room is suspended. The bottom of the living island looks like the belly of a whale and is covered with green copper plates.
