Transforming an industrial warehouse into a functional and comfortable work place

Stantec’s environmental scientists and landscape architects had outgrown their home but with no suitable corporate office space available in the area, it was decided to work with a light industrial building. The key design challenge was to create a contemporary office space that reflects the Stantec corporate standards while connecting through detail and expression to the environmental research carried out by the users.

The design exploits 25' ceilings to create a light filled workspace in the bowels of an industrial shed. The space was zoned in a series of strips leading from reception through a band of meeting rooms, workstations, a lunchroom/library hub, field photo gallery, leading to the lab space. The lab space was designed to have direct access to the vital trailers and boats for water sampling.

The subtle re-enforcement of the groups’ expertise starts in the reception which features a stylized ‘log’ bench together with amoebic light fixtures. This theme is reflected in the appliqué films which feature the Latin root names of local plant and animal species. The back wall of the reception conceals a strip of meeting rooms that open onto the workstation space. This wall also frames the opening into the workspace and features wall cut-outs for plants.

The workstations are a combination of three Teknion product lines. The workstations are kitted out with a wide range of storage options to suit a diverse world of scientific documentation. Overhead lighting establishes a secondary ceiling plane that helps the eye measure the height of the space will providing non-glare indirect lighting.

Beginning with an empty shell, provided the opportunity to implement the electrical and mechanical systems from scratch and to incorporate the latest energy efficient systems, ensuring that all aspects of that project demonstrate sustainable stewardship.
