Designed by Austin-Smith:Lord, the new Bakery Works project in Liverpool has this week received planning permission
The £12m development for Frenson Ltd is located on a steeply sloping site on Berry Street and is within Liverpool’s Duke Street Conservation Area in the heart of the historic Ropewalks and will provide twenty-one high quality 1 and 2 bed apartments and two 2 bed duplexes. It is envisaged that the façade of 37-43 Berry Street be retained and incorporated into the new development.
The project seeks to re-establish the urban context of the existing streets. Apartments will be situated on the first and second floors, whilst duplexes at the roof level will be provided, offering westerly views towards the river Mersey.
Composed of simple orthogonal forms, a simple palette of materials of Liverpool red brick, metal framed windows and planar glazing is used for the building, while the north and south facades make contrasting uses of the materials to reflect the difference in orientation.
High quality composite concrete paneling is used to form the main mass of the building, while copper bonded sheet cladding wraps around the extruded elements of the form, perforated at balcony locations to allow light to pass through. The copper will eventually dull to a ochre colour before taking on the more traditional green patina of copper, giving the building its own history, texture and unique identity within its historic setting.
It is expected to begin on site with demolition works happening in autumn 2007 and completion due mid summer 2008.
