One of Tokyo’s most popular landmarks, the Nakagin Capsule Tower built in 1972 by Kisho Kurokawa is under threat of demolition. Pressure is coming from the residents who are complaining that the units are difficult to maintain. Dr Kurokawa’s visionary design captured the imagination of the public by providing a compact (4 x 2.5m) solution to the city’s spiralling property costs and a glimpse of the future. However, a key element of his concept had been the planned replacement of the modules with updated units but this has not happened. There appear to be three main options.
