Multi-award winning shopping centre raises the bar for sustainable retail design
ATRIO is in many respects, conceptually as well as architecturally, no conventional shopping centre. 'Shopping Senza Confini', the programme of the firstly totally thematised shopping centre in Austria, adopts the motto of Austria, Italy and Slovenia’s cross-border Olympic bid. At the meeting point of three as countries ATRIO presents itself as tri-lingual (wording, webpage, info points, employee information, centre newspaper, menus…).
The architecture readdresses and newly interprets the notion of 'borders and the crossing of borders'. The traditional Roman 'atrium', intertwined with this notion of the three countries, is reborn in both the name ATRIO and the central plaza idea. The architectural concept arranges the mall and the INTERSPAR hypermarket around this glazed central plaza creating a new urban square for Villach.
The physical dynamic, the dimensions and the unique spatial character are due to an unusual architectural concept. The world of ATRIO begins outside the building; the landscape architecture replaces the customary grass lawn with limestone, gravel, tall grasses, water and alpine and Mediterranean flora, a landscape which combines the Alps and the Mediterranean it firmly situates the building, like a huge ship, into its surroundings.
ATRIO, with 850 employees, offers restaurants, shops and services covering 38,000m², a 600m² children world, 2,000m² covered forecourt. Rather than being organised as a strip mall the ATRIO is arranged around an internal 50x60m plaza, that is both a communal centre and highly functional. The inviting, exciting and urban ambience of the plaza has been well received by customers.
In addition to a variety of sustainable measures the 'energy piles' forming the foundation of the building serve as an innovative concept for saving energy and for gaining energy from the ground. The result of this is that ATRIO makes an annual saving of 853 tonnes of CO2 emissions in comparison with a conventional building.
ATRIO has won several awards, including:
