Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Architects' residential Unity Building in Liverpool
The Unity building is a mixed use scheme with 15,000M2 of office accommodation, shops and parking plus 161 residential units situated slightly to the North of the Liver Building and enjoys spectacular views of the Mersey and the Wirrel beyond. The two towers of the Unity building serve as powerful complements to the waterfront silhouette of the famous Merseyside buildings, the Three Graces. The towers have now become symbols of the city’s renaissance for its year as 2008 European City of Culture – not least because this development contains the first new-build office accommodation in Liverpool for 30 years. More practically this mixed development has responded sure-footedly to major demographic changes in the city and has set new benchmarks in thinking about office accommodation in a traditionally weak letting market. When designing buildings we carry out extensive research into the context we are designing within. During our study of Liverpool we rediscovered the so called dazzle ships, World War I ships with Vorticist-like camouflage painting. Studio Myserscough researched and re-interpreted the dazzle ship designs for the office and residential interiors.
