New hotel to revitalize Downtown Dallas

Covering six acres of an eight-acre site at the corner of Harwood and Young streets in downtown Dallas, adjacent to the 2.1 million sq ft Dallas Convention Center, the Omni Dallas Convention Center Hotel marks the beginning of a new, revitalized downtown Dallas.

Attached to the Dallas Convention Center, rising 23 stories with 1,016 rooms, the hotel aims to reposition the city as one of the nation’s top convention locales. Its geometry and diagram are structured to activate Lamar Street and create energy and movement through the site and into the neighbouring Convention Center.

To maximize accessibility to Convention Center amenities and promote spatial continuity between the two structures, the hotel’s activity spaces are concentrated on the lower levels, including more than 80,000 sq ft of meeting space, several restaurants, lounges and a signature spa.

The use of highly transparent glazing on the north and east facades allows for passers by to catch a glimpse of the activity within. The tower displays itself atop of massive columns and a transparent base. The rounded ends of the sculpted tower form provide the end suites with 180 degree views of North and South Dallas cityscapes.

Although substantial in scale, the building mass does not overwhelm the Convention Center or the neighbouring streets. The boomerang-shaped tower and large entry plaza provide a smooth transition from pedestrian level at the intersection of Young and Lamar Streets. The design also reflects a rational and well conceived response to limiting site constraints and a tight construction schedule.

The hotel, which is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2011, has been designed to achieve LEED Silver Level of Certification.

The remaining two acres of the site surrounding the hotel are slated for dining, retail and other development.
