Vinoly's "walkie talkie" tower approved
Rafael Vinoly’s controversial 509ft City skyscraper dubbed the “walkie talkie” tower has been approved in a move that may allow more tall buildings around the Square Mile. The City of London granted planning permission for the building last September, but two months later Ruth Kelly "called in" the plans for a public inquiry, which was held in March. Land Securities won planning permission for the 39 storey tower after the inquiry raised questions about its architectural integrity and impact on key views of London.
The decision to support the scheme was backed by CABE, the City of London, and the Greater London Authority, although English Heritage said the scheme was "oppressive and overwhelming". The building could be finished by the end of 2010.
