Plans submitted for £16.3 million building

After several months of close consultation with staff, pupils and the county council education department, HLM Architects has submitted the designs for Cornwall’s new Brannel School for planning approval.

It is hoped that the new school, which will cost £16.3 million to build, will achieve planning approval by October 2009, with construction works starting on site early 2010 and the new facilities completed for the start of the 2011 academic year. It is intended that the school will achieve BREEAM Excellent, the UK sustainability benchmark.

The new school is needed to replace existing Brannel School buildings, which have become beyond economical repair. The new buildings will provide 6,622 sq m (about 71,000 sq ft) – roughly the size of a football pitch.

Despite the scale of the rebuild, disruption will be minimal as the new school will be built on the current playing fields directly behind the existing school. The existing building will then be demolished once students have transferred to the new accommodation, a small part of the existing school will be retained and refurbished into a sports changing facilities, a staff work base and fitness centre.

“The designs are intended to provide flexible accommodation to allow for the inevitable changes that will occur during the building’s lifetime,” said director of HLM, Caroline Buckingham. “ICT infrastructure will be integrated throughout the new facilities to enable personalised learning and to take advantage of new classroom technology as it emerges. The new facility will continue the school’s excellent reputation for innovation.”

The new school building would also make it possible to provide adult education facilities to the local community.

“Brannel School will have an immense impact on the China Clay Area that it serves and the new facilities will provide access for the whole community to life-long learning,” continued Buckingham. “It will be a welcoming and exciting place for learning, providing students, staff and the local community with a healthy, challenging, inspirational and transformational learning environment.”
