Planning approval for a new gatehouse at London school

Planning has been granted for a new gatehouse at the entrance to Torriano Junior School in Camden in north London. Once built, the gatehouse will provide a flexible space in which pupils and adults will be able to learn, work and play.

The project was developed in consultation with the school, parents, and local people. It aims to further community partnerships by increasing the range of activities offered by extended services at the school. Pupils will gain from extra space for creative work.

The gatehouse design celebrates the original Victorian school building. A double form roof, allowing for an exciting and naturally-ventilated upper hall, reflects the original building's strong symmetry. Curving brick walls below invite visitors into the school, while windows peeping over the boundary wall allow passers by a glimpse of life inside.
