National Glass Museum provides art through architecture in Leerdam
Expected to complete in February 2010, the Glass Museum in Leerdam, the Netherlands consists of the design of 4 bridges connecting two historical villas creating 1,500 sq m of exhibition space for the Dutch National Museum of Glass. The concept offers a play on the transparent properties of its exhibits.
With a budget of 1.1 million € bureauSLA have designed a building which is set to be both minimal and spectacular. The minimal design connects each floor of the neighbouring villa's with sleek modern (covered) bridges constructed of steel, polycarbonate with an aluminium mesh facade allowing external/internal interaction and letting natural light play with the displays of glass within. These bridges function both as storage, pathway and exhibitionspace. Making it possible for the curator to implement long lines in the shown work, before impossible in the small rooms of the villa's.
