The firm take a role in developing Liverpool's pavilion at World Expo 2010

BDP is part of a consortium which has been awarded the contract to design and build Liverpool’s Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

The consortium led by Liverpool-based design and creative agency Uniform, including exhibition and event specialists SYMA, won the international contract following a rigorous competitive tendering process, and includes all elements of the design and build, including project management.

BDP’s role is to work closely with Uniform, the designers of the exhibition content, to design and build the pavilion. Proposals include three experience pods and interactive multimedia walls all depicting elements of Liverpool culture. A double height glass box will house the VIP and management facilities, all together creating an experience which will present Liverpool as a diverse cultural city, and will take visitors on a virtual journey across the entire North West region.

The World Expo in Shanghai runs between May 1 and October 31 and will attract around 70 million visitors. It is regarded as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to consolidate existing, and forge new relationships, in the world’s emerging markets and is predicted to deliver up to £50m in benefits to Liverpool and the North West over the next decade.

Liverpool is the only UK city except London to have a dedicated Pavilion at the event. Its presence is being led by Liverpool Vision in partnership with Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool-Shanghai Partnership and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).

BDP’s Mark Braund said: “We are very proud to be part of the consortium that has been given this incredibly prestigious commission and are looking forward to helping create a vibrant and engaging environment that will showcase the city to a global audience. Furthermore choosing award winning creative consultants, international event specialists and world-class architects to deliver the project, demonstrates the scale of Liverpool’s ambition and vision with regard to the Shanghai event.”

Work is expected to start on site in November.
