Fast tracked refurbishment of Opera House in Cape Town

Architecture has become the latest performance art to tread the boards of the 40 year old Artscape Opera House in Cape Town. With a production run of only 3 months, this challenging event will increase the capacity of the auditorium by 20% to 1,500 seats, together with additional foyer bars and ablutions. Theatre goers will experience specially designed seats mounted on a newly raked floor designed to focus views on the stage.

The cast includes GAPP Architects and Murray &Roberts Construction in the lead roles, supported by a talented cast of specialists including Mac Gregor Forsythe (Interiors), WSP (Structural), CA du Toit (Services) and WLA (QS). Local impresario Pieter Tourien has provided prompting and advice. The project was conceived by Artscape CEO, Michael Maas in collaboration with UK based theatre doyen Cameron Mackintosh. A draft script was formulated by UK theatre designers Arts Team.

The R30 million upgrade is the first step in a five year plan to accommodate Artscape’s mission to bring popular world-class productions to a wider South African audience.
