LAM Architects design innovative space for birds of prey at Rotterdam Zoo

Maragie is a design for a 'Submerge' aviary of African birds of prey. It is a sustainable and animal friendly accommodation with an unusual and exciting experience for people. The visitor is immersed in a landscape with African birds of prey to experience a special meeting. For the perception of the landscape and for the welfare of the birds a free space without columns is required.

The architecture of the design reflects that of the slightly more distant African Savannah house, also a wooden rib structure. The aviary is specifically tailored for this location along the track. The tapered plot as it were, pushes the ends of the ribs to each other, which pushes the structure into the air. This will benefit the animals. It provides a natural separation and reduces stress. The sculptural form that is created by this approach makes the building the eyecatcher for the traveller, who passes here every day by train and it seduces to take a look in the Zoo and to go and visit it.

The design of the aviary is very durable (Cradle to Cradle). How could it be otherwise, when it serves several breeding programs and the welfare of animals. For example, the wooden frames created in untreated FSC timber. They are therefore virtually free of maintenance. The bird-holding in the middle generates energy / heat & cold by so called energy-generating-facades. Hereby the bird-holding gets a pleasant and healthy indoor climate in a sustainable way.

The design is so balanced that a minimum of material is needed, especially for the foundation. The 'Submerge' aviary of African birds of prey has a small footprint on the earth and environment.
