Stephen Fletcher Architects has just completed a stunning refurbishment of this Chelsea townhouse

Only the external walls remain of this early-Victorian townhouse in Cale Street, London SW1. The interior has been completely refurbished and extended and a basement has been excavated occupying the entire footprint of the house. This houses a kitchen and wine cellar, and daylight is permitted via a new structural glass roof behind the street railings. The Living Room occupies the ground floor, and an elegant staircase with glass balustrade leads past several bedrooms and bathrooms to the top-floor Master Suite. This includes a cantilivered oak staircase to a Mezzanine Dessing Area and a sunny roof terrace. Eight new windows have been inserted on the sider elevation with plaster mouldings to match the original.
