A new framework plan for Alexandria to complete the historic eastern harbour
Alexandria’s harbour contains many of the world’s most significant archeological ruins. To rebuild the waterfront and improve access to these resources, the plan envisions the harbor as a connective loop uniting the city and its history.
Mobility and access are guiding principles. Centralised parking reduces traffic congestion, while a new tram, boardwalk, floating piers, and water taxis improve connectivity. The plan proposes to rebuild the corniche along the shore, greening the city with walkable paths and shaded streets. The site of the ancient library, now the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, is expanded into a new museum district, a place of culture and learning that benefits from its proximity to the water.
The plan's green framework guides development towards sustainable and integrative thinking. Around the harbour, a new breakwater will protect the ruins from further erosion while improving access to archeological sites. A towering solar power generator is designed to glow by night at the water’s edge, evoking both Alexandria’s ancient Pharaohs and the city’s sustainable future.
