Multi modal mixed use urban transportation center designed for China border
Luohu Land Port and Train Station area is a border control and multi-transportation urban center in Shenzhen along the Hong Kong border. It is China’s busiest land port (approximately 400,000 people passing a day) and gateway to Mainland China for people from Hong Kong and overseas. The project transformed this urban 37.5-hectare public space into an inter-modal transportation hub and ceremonial gateway for southern China. The project includes a 400-meter long plaza and glass atrium, sunken gardens, transit stations, pedestrian plazas, entry shelters, light wells, indoor and outdoor transition spaces, extensive softscape, people mover corridor and four city streets.
Where possible, daylight was brought deep into the station and glass walls and skylights allow the traveler to see adjacent garden courtyards and to know the condition of the sky. The project includes a 400-meter long plaza and glass atrium. Fritted and opaque glass in the form of curtain walls, handrails, signage, and bridges establish a light translucent quality to the space allowing the colour and texture of the green landscape to dominate. Sunken gardens of black bamboo, water and gravel allow light and air to permeate the subterranean levels of the concourse. A wedge of open park space is integrated into the station complex where at the lower level it provides a space for travellers to rest, to refresh themselves, and to wait or rendezvous with other travellers.
The design provides a sophisticated way-finding and graphics system for the different modes of transportation, an architectural cladding system for new and proposed buildings and a continuous bougainvillea trellis to provide shade at plaza level and unify various architectural styles around the plaza.
