Urban revitalisation honours Barranquilla city's foundations
This 60,000 sq m project won first prize of the International Competition promoted by the Culture Ministry of the Republic of Colombia, in the frame of the National Plan for the Recuperation of Historic Centers.
OPUS Studio's overall proposal is based on the meaning of the water, the canals, the river and the ocean; natural factors of Barranquilla, and its historic centre rising. The sinuous lines of the water shape the project incorporating green corridors within the design. The water is reborn as a reminder to the population, as the first legacy of the landscape to be recuperated.
Beyond the context, OPUS seek to make visible, the natural processes of the water in its different states, raining and dry periods, and from the perception of the place and the developed plans, they recognize the peculiarities of each area to be designed, defining a potential for each zone. Finally, they generated a system of architectonic components for all the areas, managing in this way, to minimize the costs and build a compact image of the historic centre.
