Local community invited to participate in the customisation of the public gardens in Zagreb
Custom-Made Park is the title of the competition winning project for a public park in Spansko neighbourhood of Zagreb, Croatia, conceived by the architectural studio Dva Plus - authors Judita Ljutic, Damir Ljutic, Ana Dana Beros and Iskra Filipovic. In the project the comprehensive architectural design is replaced by strategic programming of public space.
The new park platform, with the size of 243, 000 sq ft, is conceived as an outdoor community living room. The design of park equipment resembles home furniture design, thus contributing to appropriation of public space. One of the design starting points was the dissipation of definite borders between green and paved surfaces of the park, conceived through the implementation of aperiodic mathematical Penrose paving method. The main project quality lies in the contemporary approach to design that implies and induces change according to the users’ needs. The local community is invited to actively participate in the final shaping - customisation of the park and their creative contribution is not merely in the domain of form-giving, but indeed it domesticates the default park surface into the Custom-Made Park.
