WTC Last Column comes home for permanent installation
It was a ceremony not too dissimilar from a memorial procession itself, as press were invited to travel with the Last Column from Hangar 17 at JFK airport to the World Trade Center site in the early hours of Monday. Sheathed with an American flag like an American hero, the final steel beam to be removed from the World Trade Center site was at last returned to the site of its final moments where it will now remain.
The 36 foot high beam which was covered in tributes from workers, rescue personnel, and family members before the column was removed from the site in May 2002, will now serve as a permanent reminder of the recovery efforts as an installation in the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
Today, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum will open a 9/11 Memorial Preview Site near the World Trade Center which will be open to the public. The preview is designed to give the public a taste of the designs by displaying renderings and models, to view the construction progress at the World Trade Center site via live construction images, and to participate in the creation of the Museum by sharing their 9/11 story through an on-site recording booth. The recordings will be used for the Museum’s planned introductory exhibition that will include a soundscape of people remembering, in multiple languages, where they were on September 11, 2001 and how they learned of the attacks.
