The most significant development at the Eden Project since the Biomes opened in 2001
Grimshaw’s fourth phase of the Eden Project in Cornwall – an education centre known as the Core – opened to the public this week. The architects collaborated with the sculptor, Peter Randall-Page, to develop the design exploring the universal rhythms found in nature and using these geometries as the basis for the design.
The roof structure is based on a double-curved timber lamella grid and clad with copper. At three points the roof grid dips to ground level, terminating in concrete feet that provide buttressing for the structure and points for water drainage.
Upstanding pyramids and openable windows ensure the building is well lit and naturally ventilated. Photovoltaic panels are incorporated so that the building can generate much of its own power.
