ABLE Façade System used in MoD building
A new pre-fabricated bomb-proof wall system, developed by Alumet, has recently won the company the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2009 in the Innovation category.
The ABLE Façade System (AFS), AFS is unique in the fact that it is the only pre-fabricated bomb-blast resistant walling system available in the UK. It provides an appealing alternative to re-enforced concrete allowing the client to save both time and money with the following advantages:
Wall panels are significantly slimmer than cast concrete.
Walls can be erected in frost and rain, unlike concrete.
12 sq m can be installed in just 25 minutes.
Walls are effective as bomb-blast resistant structures immediately without the need to cure.
Staff, logistics and health & safety are all easier to manage as the majority of work is conducted in factory conditions.
The AFS is highly versatile and can be clad in a variety of aesthetically pleasing products including aluminium, brass, zinc, copper, terracotta and timber allowing it to suite a range of design tastes and fashion trends. The finished building looks like any normal commercial unit - preventing that 'bunker' look of old.
The system has passed rigorous blast tests where it exceeded requirements by 20%.
Alumet has recently completed a £6.3 million project to design, fabricate and install the AFS on a large Ministry of Defence development, with the system receiving great reviews all round. The Construction Director from Main Contractors BAM gave this statement:
“The ABLE Façade System has made this project possible and the speed of enclosure has enabled the internal trades to complete ahead of programme.”
So far the system has won the company eight awards for excellence and innovation as well as numerous health and safety awards for installation on-site.
