HTA Architects design Upton Site C in Northampton

Site C is composed of high quality detached and semidetached villas which complement the whole of the Upton development (sites A to F). Site C is at the south western edge of the new Upton development, a 1 hectare strip between the Nene Country Park to the south and Ashby Wood to the north. Long distance views are available over the park to the south. Generous openings to major living spaces visually link the interiors with the landscape and moderate (according to aspect) the daylight and sunshine received in return. There are no blank side walls and the villa frontages face south to maximise sunlight. Public rooms face the street to help improve safety and security. Plot shapes have been designed to provide wide south-facing frontages with minimal overshadowing to maximise winter solar gain, with most dwellings arranged along streets within 15° of E-W. Floor plans are narrowed to make best use of natural daylighting, reduce reliance on artificial light and allow natural ventilation. Pitched roofs provide ideal platforms for photovoltaic and solar hot water arrays. Photovoltaic panels will be integrated on the roofs of five houses and be grid connected, providing a total of 5 kWp for the whole development. Water efficient appliances will reduce consumption to less than 35m³/bedspace per year. Rainwater collection will be provided for all garden watering. Each solar gain space has been carefully modelled to predict its behaviour and determine the level of shading and ventilation required. Wherever possible, constructions are Arated according the BRE Green Guide to Housing Specification. A number of the dwellings feature an element of green roof, comprising sedum sponge, which forms an important part of the rainwater collection system.
