Stunning.

Award Entry

A small project achieved through modest means to produce maximum effect

The context is a vineyard 40km outside Melbourne, Australia. This landscape installation consists of over 700 purposely made ‘tree guards’ which are otherwise typically seen at the verge of roads or land reclamation projects when newly planted seedlings are protected by a simple plastic ‘sleeve’ mounted on wooden stakes over each plant.

We explored the potential of this everyday object and reinterpreted it for our use in the vineyard grounds by especially manufacturing multicoloured versions of the plastic sleeves in hot pink, orange and white colours and installing these over especially coloured stakes to match the respective sleeves.

The ‘tree guard’ units thus form a sculpture, in the form of a stylised flower, which refers lyrically to the potential future growth of the plant within the guards. Hence the beauty of the garden is immediately restored by turning the utilitarian object into an element telling a much bigger story.

Sue Buchanan and Eli Giannini acknowledge Yering Station management and arts administration for their support and encouragement.
