Brighton Centre redevelopment goes to prolific UK architect Ken Shuttleworth

The architect responsible for such iconic UK projects as the Gherkin and the new development of Wembley Stadium is to transform the Brighton Centre and regenerate the surrounding public quarter in a £400million revamp. Global property developer Standard Life Investments and Brighton & Hove City Council has confirmed that Make Architects, founded by Ken Shuttleworth who worked with Foster and Partners on the aforementioned prestigious projects, will be collaborating with Urban Practitioners, Vx3 and CDA to develop the plans which Brighton Council hope could generate up to £3 billion of investment in the city over 20 years.

The plans will redevelop the famous 70's music venue and create a new conference centre, deliver an extended and improved Churchill Square shopping mall and add a hotel.

Ken Shuttleworth, founder of Make, said: “It’s a real privilege to be appointed to design this development and as a team we are really looking forward to working together in realising a striking, innovative and highly sustainable building for Brighton. The city has such a distinct character and our design must be rooted in this context; uniquely Brightonian.”

The Brighton Centre first opened its doors in 1977 and has seen the likes of Bing Crosbie, the Boomtown Rats, Queen, the Jam, Tom Jones, Jonny Mathis and, more recently, Blur perform throughout its history. The redevelopment is hoped to create an even more legendary venue.

Council leader Mary Mears said: “Make Architects has demonstrated in their approach that they will be able to deliver a world class development to live up to the council’s and Standard Life Investments’ aspirational vision for this highly sensitive and important site.

“Delivery of a new convention centre has been a key economic priority for the city. It shows the major developers regard Brighton & Hove as a great place to invest.”

Make are the first in a group of eight professional practices to be allocated to the project with the full team expected to be confirmed by late August after which a six month feasibility study will take place.
