France takes environmental stand on office comfort

From the 1st July, companies in France will be strictly monitored and could face fines for having office AC systems set to below 26°c. The new regulations, aimed at reducing the carbon emissions of the commercial sector came into force on 19th March and apply to both new designs and existing buildings. This measure could herald a new frontier in the ongoing campaign to reduce energy consumption.

The design parameters for office environmental control have long been guided by the statutory requirements governing “acceptable” working conditions, typically including max and min temperatures for summer and winter seasons.

However, it is believed that this new legislation in France may portend the introduction of a new set of environmental parameters effectively overlaying the existing norms with another set of limits, but this time being min and max for the same seasons.
