Contemporary architecture in South Tyrol
Feldthurns is a small community in South Tyrol, an area of the Italian Alps, near the Austrian border. The project “Community Centre of Feldthurns” is located in the centre of the village and forms its new heart. The location serves as a meeting point and moreover offers a great panoramic view up to the mountains of the Eisack Valley.
The positioning of the Community Centre of Feldthurns has resulted in the creation of a large public square fronted by the new Town Hall and the Commercial building. They appear as impressively large structures which accord perfectly with the proportions of the surrounding buildings.
A slight turn of the buildings opens the new square towards the village. The structure of the traditional saddle roof is integrated. Orienting the gable ends to the square, the public function of the buildings is underlined.
The contemporary architecture, with its clear style and clean lines, avoids any historical imitation, whilst the use of mineral plaster and the simple format of the window are pleasantly reminiscent of traditional Alpine buildings.
The Town Hall building being placed in the most representative position, public and private facilities are located in the smaller building below.
