32 metre sculpture rides high at Goodwood Festival of Speed 

Goodwood stately home in Chichester, England, became embroiled in a world of steel, oil and the ever fearsome car fanatic this week as the Festival of Speed parked up on its land for three days. As if the tyre tracks of 350 cars and footprints of 150,000 visitors hadn't left an indelible enough mark on the land, the tread mark of the 44 tonne, 32 metre high sculpture created by Capita Bobrowski – part of Capita Symonds - may just have left a lasting reminder of the events.

Sponsored by Audi as part of its centenary year celebrations, the vertical sculpture provides a fairly literal envisioning of the event's theme of speed by showing two cars swooshing into the air, leaving a conjoined track in their wake. The sculpture was designed by renowned sculptor Gerry Judah who is famed for his designs featuring automobilia.

Spanning the ages of car history, the design for Goodwood featured a 1937 Auto Union Streamliner, and the recently launched R8 V10 sports car. In 1938 the Auto Union was brought into the spotlight by breaking incredible speed records at 270 mph before tragically being ripped apart and killing its driver, one of Germany's great racing heroes, Bernd Rosemeyer.

Although the 44 tonne, 32metre high structure is entirely fabricated from steel, Capita Bobrowski utilised in-house software that was originally written for tensile fabric to provide the complex cutting patterns needed for the steel plates that are welded to the central core tube.
