SWA Group complete design for military training center
In a master-plan won through a design competition, SWA Group is completing work on a 1.5 sq km sports and training facility for the Korean military services in Mungyeong, South Korea, about two hours southeast of Seoul.
The plan uses a triangle-and-axis layout to provide proper access for public-oriented facilities at its main entrance with green-space and quiet areas at the base of Ohjung Mountain, a pristine and well-recognized local vista.
The Korea Armed Forces Athletic Corps Training Campus, a project on behalf of Daelim in conjunction with Space Group architects, provides a dynamic, healthy setting for high performance sports training, says SWA's Marco Esposito. The campus rises above the agricultural plain of the Young River at the base of Ohjung Mountain. The main entrance accommodates the campus' most public functions for visitors and military alike, with the sports training and event facilities located in the heart and more restricted areas such as the residential compound, shooting facilities and equestrian training located furthest from the entrance. The campus' main training and event facilities - the Gym, Stadium, Training Complex and Tennis Center - form a triangle along the Entrance Boulevard and an axis to Ohjung Mountain. Construction is anticipated to begin by late 2009 or early 2010.
