KSP Engel and Zimmermann designs Astra Tower in Hamburg's St. Pauli district
The new 18-storey building, designed by KSP Engel and Zimmermann
Architects, is located on the former Bavaria grounds in Hamburg's St.
Pauli district.
By realizing new structures and uses and fitting these into an existing urban setting, not only has the entire district been upgraded, but actually redefined. Nevertheless, there are clear allusions to the old Bavaria complex visible in the Astra Tower.
The building is 60m high, transparent, and affords a panoramic view. It
has been classically sub-divided into three parts: a base section with
hospitality outlets, a shaft, and a striking crown at the top. The
transition from base to shaft is marked by a glass-covered crossover.
Horizontal strips of window and spandrels structure the façade and lend
the high-rise its characteristic look. The central access core and the
free office zones that evolve around it allow for very flexible usage.
The hospitality outlets on the ground floor provide a communications
platform for the new district and open the Astra Tower to the public.
The building is scheduled to go turn-key at the end of 2007.
