PBK completes new Abbotsford sports facility

The University College of the Fraser Valley is the spectacular setting for the new 7,000-seat Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Developed as the entry to the existing campus, the facility is exceptionally well integrated into a site that is characterized by extensive and mature west coast landscaping. The new facility has already become a recognizable icon for both the College and the City.

The project is a three level design with the event or ice level at grade with the rear or “back of house” end of the building. The level up is the main or public concourse, integrated with the rolling terrain of the campus and located to take advantage of a natural high point on the site. As a result, the front doors of the facility are also at grade allowing for easy accessibility for all visitors. The third level of the complex includes 20 private suites, “loge boxes”, a large multi-purpose lounge, and smaller party rooms.

The design team drew its inspiration from the incredible site and chose a palette of forms, colours and textures that would be sensitive to the context and protective of the pedestrian traffic flowing to both the building and the academic buildings. A large curved canopy overhangs in a very strong and dramatic way and immediately leads the visitor to the building entry. A warm palette of siding, ground face concrete block, glass (windows and smaller canopies) and horizontal metal cladding are woven into a dramatic, yet quiet architectural language. The design supports the existing architectural and landscaping values of the campus while creating a unique destination for entertainment and community assembly.
