BBG-BBGM design completes in New York
Located in New York City’s Tribeca neighbourhood, the new Smyth Hotel features 100 keys of boutique hotel rooms, 15 full-service residential units, a ground floor restaurant, and a sophisticated cellar bar.
The prominent glass corner of the Smyth’s façade looks out onto a five street junction, putting this building in the midst of New York’s bustling downtown city life. Taking advantage of the location, the design intent of the building gives a strong modern presence to the area. Encircled by industrial buildings that echo one another, The Smyth represents a variation from these surroundings. Large windows with distinct articulations make the structure unique and aesthetically pleasing, while the movement of the city is incorporated into the design of window patterns through signature vertical elements which alternate positions to draw the eye upward. In order to visibly lengthen the constrained proportions city zoning dictated, BBG-BBGM introduced the vertical accent of dark gray mullions on windows, which elongates the structure. The visual result is a building that exceeds its own physical dimensions. With interiors by Yabu Pushelburg, the exterior design was created by BBG-BBGM.
