Stanford White’s Newport Casino Theatre to be restored
Designed in 1879 by Stanford White, The Casino Theatre located in Newport, Rhode Island is one of the most influential examples of shingle style architecture in America. Having received $3million in grants and pledges, and a commitment from a nearby university to use the building for its theatre program, this National treasure is happily being restored.
The Theatre is part of a complex of buildings known as the Newport Casino, which also includes the International Tennis Hall of Frame. It seats 315 on the main level and is richly decorated with basket-weave plaster and gilded restoration.
The building’s $4.5 million restoration, which is being led by Providence, Rhode Island based Durkee, Brown, Viveiros and Werenfels Architects, will involve restoring the decorative finishes and features while introducing new sound, mechanical and electrical systems.
Once complete, the theatre will be used by Salve Regina University’s theatre department for the academic year and by community theatre groups in the summer months.
