Mirage Dance studio rises from the ashes
A fire whirled through the old dance hall of Falsterbo, Sweden in 2006 taking the twinkle out of dancers' toes and leaving a community mourning its loss. Until the devastation was turned into an opportunity to create an even more spectacular venue, that is, and one of the most highly popular competitions in Sweden was held for the facility's redesign. Kjellgren Kaminsky claimed the prize with their design for The Mirage, one that would establish a dialogue with both the dance hall's past, and its future.
Like a diffuse recollection, the new hall which is inaugurated this week, reflects the position and façades of the old dance hall while simultaneously reflecting its surroundings in every moment; the changing seasons, the light and the people passing by. The part mirrored, part graphite coloured cement cladding of the façades allows the building to absorb its surroundings with an almost osmosis like transition. The pattern of the bands reflects that of the original dance hall's exterior.
Much emphasis was put on designing spaces with extraordinary acoustic qualities. A custom made damping wall was designed in collaboration with an acoustic expert. The wall consists of a black acoustic felt covered by white wooden boards of various dimensions which creates strong graphical elements in the whole building and at no greater cost than by standard solutions.
The addition of two restaurants for 250 people, a new dance hall, a staged room and a roof terrace have made the building a landmark in its nature reserve location, all within the same footprint as its predecessor.
