UK architects Foster and Partners design for the Hearst Corporation is taking shape on 57th Street. His first building in the city is built atop an original Deco building designed Joseph Urban in 1926 for William Randolph Hearst. Urban had foreseen the possibility of skyward expansion and provided steel columns stubbed up through the roof. At 597 ft high the structure will not be amongst New York’s tallest but will be of architectural interest. The new building will feature a 40-70 feet high entrance lobby/atrium with skylights and a 30 feet high clerestory with employee cafeteria, exhibition space and auditorium. Access is from 8th Avenue through an existing vaulted entrance via escalators set within water sculpture within large rectangular void.
