Albert Basin earmarked as world-class green flagship development

The London Borough of Newham in October 2004 published a draft for the redevelopment of the Albert Basin. Five years later, the project has been earmarked by the Clinton Climate Initiative as one of 16 projects worldwide to be supported by the Climate Positive Development Program supporting 'Climate Positive' real estate developments which strive to reduce the amount of on-site CO2 emissions to below zero.

The draft provides a vision for the regeneration of the Albert Basin area at the eastern end of the Royal Docks resulting in over 2,000 new homes. 6 distinct areas are to be developed, land occupied by the IVAX Pharmaceuticals European headquaters has already completed and the Royal Quay development is now in construction. The other development areas are: the Armada will be a mixed use area with over 50,000 sq m of office space and up to 700 residential units; the Gallions will also be a mixed use site with residential adjacent to the existing Royal Quay development with 17,400 sq m of business space; Royal Albert Basin with Newham College of Further Education’s Thames House campus is envisaged to remain in this area in the short to medium term, other discussions are underway; and Royal Albert Island is to be substantially a residential quarter with its own park and childrens play area, and an area of up to 1,400 family housing units.

Sauerbruchhutton are involved in the master planning and residential developments within the scheme (pictured).
