Peculiar that yet another yet to be completed grand projet in China has caught fire...please layoff the fireworks and fire (pardon pun) the safety manager...

With any fire one must ask what is combustible? With steel and concrete building there is usually very little combustible material around. So what is different about construction practices in China? Take a look at the bamboo scaffolding. Very sustainable but also a very combustible material.

Blaze at construction site could mean delays for cultural centrepiece

Guangzhou Opera House, currently under construction in China, was set ablaze on Saturday 9 May. The fire at the Zaha Hadid design overlooking the Pearl River is the second to hit significant modern buildings in China this year with OMA's TVCC building devastated in February following a fireworks display.

A statement released by Hadid's office yesterday said: “An incident involving a fire at the construction site of the Guangzhou Opera House occurred at 7:50am on Saturday 9 May 2009. All staff were evacuated safely with no injuries. No members of the public were involved.

“The fire was extinguished by the Fire Department in under an hour. Initial inspections confirm the structure of the building remains completely intact. Further investigations into the cause are undergoing. We must wait for these investigations to be completed before we know if the opening date will need to be altered.”

The steel building frame of the building requires a significant amount of welding and it has been reported by local press that this is the suspected cause of the fire.

The facility will provide a 1,800 seats Grand theatre, entrance lobby & lounge, multifunction hall, other auxiliary facilities & support premises upon completion. Commissioned by the Guangzhou Municipal Government, the building will be the heart of the district's new cultural hub. Its unique twin boulder design will open access to the riverside and dock areas and create a new dialogue with the emerging new town.
