Perkins Eastman's facility for long-term care revolves around household model

Childers Place – a 105,000 sf skilled care residence completed in March 2007 – has created a new identity for long-term care. The design harmonises a wellness influence with regional aesthetics to create a comforting, tranquil, and therapeutic environment.

The project brief was developed in response to the owner’s vision of an environment where residents would want to live, guests would want to visit, and employees would want to work. The purposeful balance of beauty and functionality resulted in a building that serves all users.

Residents enjoy private 350 sf rooms with bay windows that provide expansive views or terraces that allow bed-fast residents to be wheeled outside. Each room is part of an intimate 10-unit household. The six households are paired into three neighborhoods, a model that creates shorter walking distances and supports small-scale dining and care options that offer residents flexibility and choice. The household design also supports the universal employee model, which delivers significant operational benefits through higher employee satisfaction and optimum staff efficiencies.

To enhance the visitor experience, a desk workspace and wireless networking in each resident room provide family members a connection to outside responsibilities, and window seats offer overnight sleeping space. The residence also serves the wider community, offering a resource center on issues facing aging adults. The public is welcome to visit local and national senior-related agencies that occupy tenant space on the first floor.

Childers Place is a true center of excellence that has advanced the healthcare industry and redefined the long-term care experience.
