New hospital in Alberta makes the most of multimedia technology

ABACUS is the “hospital of the future” where medical professionals and researchers apply breakthrough therapies and biomedical devices to patients who require immediate care, clinical trials participants and participants of educational programs. This innovative centre provides patient care alongside scientific research and collaboration on the international stage. Care, diagnostics, R&D and education are interwoven and interactive within one localised facility. ABACUS enhances patient care, facilitates healthcare research and development and contributes to continued education.

ABACUS has digital transformation at its heart, harnessing cutting-edge IT to save and enrich lives. It leverages advanced technology to meet various needs from evaluating drug interactions at point of care to creating a venue where healthcare professionals, patients and others can communicate locally and internationally.

ABACUS has four distinct, yet interconnected cores of service; Imaging and Intervention, Vascular Biology-Gene Therapy-Biomarker Discovery Unit, Trial Design/Data Analysis, and Data Acquisition and Transmission Facility (Shaw Auditorium)

The Shaw Auditorium is a key component of ABACUS allowing healthcare professionals, patients, researchers, students and others to communicate and interact locally and internationally using conventional conferencing, virtual conferencing and digital connection with clinical operations. The Shaw within ABACUS was designed to have a high degree of flexibility in use and be accessible to a broader range of individuals all within a localised environment that avoided the hospital design stereotyping of austere and overly clinical or institutional aesthetic.
