Historic London hospice goes under the knife
Founded in 1891, Trinity Hospice in South London is the oldest hospice in the country. Trinity occupies a terrace of beautiful Georgian houses overlooking Clapham Common and sits within magnificent landscaped gardens.
Despite the beautiful setting, the existing facilities were dated and inappropriate for some of their core services. In-patients were being cared for in multi-bedded rooms within the Georgian houses or in a post war extension, making clinical care difficult and isolating patients from the activities housed within other parts of the site.
tp bennett's design merges in-patient and out-patient activities within a contemporary pavilion building set within the existing historic gardens. The new building has been configured to allow every patient the experience of these gardens and the ability to interact with the range of day care activities within the hospice. All reference to the traditional arrangement of wards behind heavy shut doors along long lifeless corridors have been eliminated from this design.
Privacy and patient control have been provided through the careful integration of screens and shutters that allow every patient to decide on their level of involvement with these activities and surroundings. The proposals incorporate a high quality fully accessible landscaping scheme that builds upon the qualities and themes in the existing garden established by the original designers.
