Henning Larsen set the benchmark for cancer care
The Radium Hospital in Oslo is the most important cancer treatment and research institution in Norway. Placed in a hilly and densely built-up area in Ullern, Oslo, the hospital has been added several extensions over the years – most recently the new radiation therapy and a separate research department facility, both designed by Henning Larsen Architects.
The radiation therapy unit includes five new radiation therapy bunkers, examination functions partly below terrain with views of the nearby valley, as well as laboratory, teaching and office facilities above terrain. The new and the existing hospital together frame a local arrival plaza offering a new direct entry for patients to all parts of the building.
The most important goal in the design of the new radiation treatment building was to satisfy all technical and logistical requirements and create a building with a positive effect on both personnel and patients. This was especially the case with the placement of the treatment functions on level one, seven meters below the plaza grade, generating a need to consider daylighting from the glass façade towards the south and contact with nature on the west side of the building.
The spacious arrival hall embraces the daylight through the large southward glass façade on the 3rd and 4th floors leading it on to the underground treatment area and the other central functions of the building.
In addition to fulfilling all technical and logistical requirements the new extension provides a pleasant and practical working environment for the staff. The radiation therapy rooms have birch walls and ceilings that reflect the daylight bringing a warm and reassuring atmosphere into the building to heal and comfort the hospital’s patients.
The building is gently integrated in the surrounding landscape. The white and clear-cut four story façade with its calm band of windows offers excellent views to the Marrae Valley. Inside the building, the artistic decoration reveals a unique and appropriate selection of artworks.
