Best Federal buildings in America honoured in GSA Design Excellence Awards

The Government Services Administration (GSA), the agency that hires architects to design its federal buildings, has announced this year’s winners of the Design Excellence Awards. Eighteen projects in thirteen categories including architecture, preservation, engineering, sustainability, interior design, art, urban design, and construction, were honoured in a ceremony at the Ronald Regan building in Washington, D.C.

In architecture, eight projects were recognized. Morphosis was the top winner, receiving two Architecture Honor awards for the Wayne Lyman Morse U.S Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon and the San Francisco Federal Building in San Francisco, California. Architecture Citations were given to Moshe Safdie + Associates for its design of the U.S. Courthouse in Springfield, Massachusetts and to Hammond Beeby Rupert Ainge Architects for the U.S. Land Port of Entry in Raymond, Montana.

In the unbuit category, four projects were honoured. The winners are Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects for its design of the U.S. Couthouse in Austin, Texas; Hodgetts + Fung Design & Architecture for its design of border crossing facility in Donna, Texas; Julie Snow Architects for a U.S. Port of Entry in Warroad, Minnesota and Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects for its U.S. Land Port of Entry in Massena, NY.

Commenting on the awards GSA acting Administrator Paul Prouty said, “These projects represent the best of the best of GSA’s work for its federal agency customers and the American people. They embody GSA’s goals to create superior workplaces, develop creative solutions, and implement cost-effective acquisition services and management policies.”
