VBM Architecten transforms the Grauwzusters neo-gothic monastery in to a multi purpose building for the university 

A neo-gothic monastery in the historic city fabric of Antwerp has been transformed into a multi-purpose building for the University office headquarters. The answer was MULTIPLE CHOICE - the maximization of simultaneous events that could take place in the building. The introverted character of the monastery is kept, but the austere atmosphere inside is transformed into a richer and interactive one. The chapel is restored and maintained as a concert hall. The central patio garden was excavated to provide room for a new multi-media auditorium on the basement level, where the cellars with their old brick vaults are transformed into exhibition spaces. The central patio is covered with a glass canopy and will become the main circulation node, but also the representative space of the building.
