Make has been commissioned to design a spectacular private residence within the exclusive Humber Valley Resort, a Newfound development.

Humber Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty in western Newfoundland, Canada, renowned for its dramatic landscape of lakes and forests. The plot for which this house has been designed sweeps along the shore of the Humber River, with densely forested woodland sloping down the valley from the hills. Set into the steeply sloping hillside at the water’s edge, the south-facing house is oriented to ensure that interior spaces enjoy the best possible views out over land and water while benefiting from maximum levels of natural light. The distinctive structure is formed using geometry inspired by the natural rock formations of the glacier-carved valleys of the Humber Valley, while glazing configurations are designed to evoke the cascades of a waterfall. Stone sourced from local quarries is affixed to a timber frame to create the effect of a dynamic crystalline mass that emerges from the hillside, creating a building made entirely from sustainable, locally-sourced materials. In keeping with the design concept of harmonising with its natural setting, the building is also equipped with ground-source heating and cooling, and is designed to offer optimised energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
