Andrade Morettin Arquitetos Associados wins first prize for the sustainable design "Galapagos"

On the island of San Cristóbal in the Galapagos Islands is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno; a city port, human settlement and nature observatory, inserted in the territory characterized by its extraordinary landscapes. The task proposed by the Competition conducted us to think that there were ways towards a sustainable Galápagos. Particularly inspired by the notable capacity of transformation and geometrication of the territory, exercised by the precolombian american civilizations, we defined our strategy. We conceived a single intervention: to insert an urban geometric artefact: a square with sides of 1000 meters. Having identified the principal features of the existing settlement and its relation with the natural landscape, we sought to reinforce these features and maintain them visible: revealing its hidden geometry. Furthermore we suggested the creation of cooperative organizations, associated with an open university, for the development of the main local productive activities, such as construction systems, traditional fishing, family agriculture, tourism etc.
