Make's unique new campus for University of Nottingham

Make was commissioned by the University of Nottingham in 2005 to develop a masterplan for a brownfield site adjacent to the existing Jubilee Campus. The brief specified the need to create a distinctive new identity for this important university facility with a series of iconic buildings which would form a new gateway to the campus and create an emphatic new presence for the University both within the city of Nottingham and in the broader national and international academic context.

Three new buildings were designed and built for the first phase of the masterplan: the Sir Colin Campbell Building, International House and the Amenities Building. In addition, a striking vertical steel form – the tallest structure of its kind in the UK – creates a new landmark for the University and the city of Nottingham. Additionally, a generous public boulevard has been drawn laterally across the site to improve connections and provide a focus for leisure and recreation.

In response, Make’s masterplan has transformed a barren and largely derelict former industrial site into a richly varied and welcoming environment with its own distinct sense of place. The entire development has been designed to deliver exemplary standards of energy efficiency and demonstrate the University’s active commitment to a wide-ranging policy of environmental responsibility.

Completed in June 2008, the extension of Jubilee Campus provides an extensive range of amenities which allows the University to consolidate its reputation for academic excellence. The landmark development delivers a remarkable new environment for research, study, business and leisure which benefits both the University and the city of Nottingham as a whole.
