Murray O'Laoire/Brian O'Connell Associates, healthcare architects’ Tullamore Hospital redevelopment enters its final phase
The new Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, Ireland, is in its final phase of development and is due to fully open later this year. The 30,000 square metre building replaces the existing 1940’s building, a protected structure, which is retained for non-acute services into the future. The new hospital is set in a landscaped campus within easy walking distance of the town centre and will have access to the new Tullamore By-Pass when complete in 2009. Visitors arrive at the main hospital forecourt, which gives on to a generous, naturally lit 3 storey entrance concourse and hospital street. Future expansion is a major generator for the building form, along with the maximization of natural light and ventilation. MOLA/BOCA’s design brings the best values of contemporary architectural thought and practice to the delivery of acute healthcare services and provides an appropriate, therapeutic and cheerful environment for the people in the Midland Region.
